CANON'S RF 24-240MM SUPERZOOM LENS | FIRST LOOK

Canon's RF 24-240mm Superzoom Lens | First Look

With the entry-level mirrorless EOS RP having been released from Canon they have now announced their brand new RF 24-240mm superzoom lens – making this currently the largest focal range in the system - but better still at an affordable price.

Canon were kind enough to lend me their pre-production model but unfortunately, I am unable to share the images captured while out shooting due to this not the final production quality. I did experience a couple of warning messages when switching on the camera due to the installed firmware but saying this the lens still responded very well.

Weighing in at 750g this 10x optical zoom lens is ideal for anyone wanting an all in one solution without the bulk, whether out travelling shooting landscapes or close up portraits. With a 7-blade circular aperture ranging from F4 – 6.3 the 24-240 isn’t the fastest lens in the range but considering its size, this is still rather impressive.

The autofocus felt fast and responsive while also being lovely and quiet. Anyone shooting wildlife or looking for a smooth pull focus effect while in shooting video you can quite happily achieve this thanks to the NANO USM focusing system.

Now 10x optical zoom is never easy to use handheld but with Canon’s built-in 5 stop image stabilisation your images are pin-sharp at the long focal length and throughout low light shooting and when coupling this with the RP or R’s full-frame sensor and you are on to a winner.

The 24-240mm will be very appealing to any video users of the EOS R range giving you a huge range to play with while out shooting. That 5 stop image stabilisation also really lends itself well in video helping to keep your footage smooth and crisp.

On the lens we have the usual stabilisation switch along with the EOS R systems control switch allowing you to use the control ring to customise your setup for quicker settings handling. You can also take full manual focusing control by clicking across to the focus option – at any time while you shoot.

For any current or future EOS R or RP users looking for that portable and versatile lens the 24-240mm ticks a lot of boxes with its 10x optical zoom. Ideal for everything from wide-angle landscapes to close-up portraits or wildlife and video, this lens can really handle itself well while not being a burden in your kit bag or your wallet.
